What is unfolding?
Let's consider a very simple lottery game (let's call it Simple Lottery) in which there are only 7 numbers and 5 of them are drawn.
I will ask you to choose 5 numbers from 1 to 7.
For sure the 5 numbers you chosen is one of the lines below:
These 21 lines represent what is called a “C7.5 combination”. This particular example is called "total unfolding" because it contains all possible combinations that can be done with 7 numbers.
If you played all of these 21 lines, you would ensure the guaranty of hitting the first prize and several second prizes.
Unfortunately, the more numbers the game has, the more lines there are, making it much more difficult to hit the first prize.
In the example presented above (Simple Lottery with 7 numbers), suppose that each line is rather expensive and that placing all 21 lines cost a lot of money already.
So you want to place less bets, but instead of having the first prize ensured, you want to ensure to reach the second prize (4 hits).
This is achieved with a "reduced system", which unlike "total unfolding" does not contain all possible combinations. In fact, it contains only a few combinations, chosen to ensure hitting the second prize.
For example, if you play the following lines:
Whatever the 5 numbers drawn, you will always have at least 4 winning numbers (check)!
Furthermore, if you are lucky enough and one of the previous 3 lines is drawn, you may even hit the first prize, but obviously, it is not guaranteed.
Add 3 stars
You can add 3 stars to any unfolding without increasing the price of it. So if the 2 stars drawn are among the ones you chosen, you will have the guarantee of at least one and 2, 3 or 4 numbers, depending on which unfolding you chosen.
Let´s take for example 7 numbers:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7 and stars 1. 2 .3
The unfolding reduced at -1 (guarantee of 4/5) for these numbers is:
1. 2. 3. 5. 6.
1. 2. 4. 6. 7.
2. 3. 4. 5. 7.
With 3 stars you can make 3 combinations 1.2. - 1.3. - 2.3. Now we add each combination of stars to lines accordingly.
1. 2. 3. 5. 6. - 1.2.
1. 2. 4. 6. 7. - 1.3.
2. 3. 4. 5. 7. - 2.3.
In case of an unfolding with more numbers, 8 for example, we proceed the same way.
1. 2. 3. 5. 6. - 1.2.
1. 2. 3. 5. 8. - 1.3.
1. 4. 6. 7. 8. - 2.3.
2. 3. 4. 5. 7. - 1.2.
2. 3. 5. 6. 8. - 1.3.
So, if the 2 stars and 5 numbers drawn are among ones you chosen, you will ensure at least 1 winning star and 4 winning numbers.
